Marshall Plan Lecture. Podium Discussion

Marshall Plan Lecture
Is democracy a losing game?
Reflections on (i)liberalism, democracy and authoritarianism in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

It seemed to be a wonderful dream of a world and particularly Europe reaching the end of history (Francis Fukuyama) and entering an era of ever lasting liberal democratic peace. Today, the situation is rather dramatic, with some major challenges and conflicting trends portraying a picture of a continent where democracy is challenged by illiberal trends and where new “rings of (authoritarian) fire” are dividing Europe. The lecture will reflect upon critical challenges for European democracy today, look towards Eastern and Southeastern Europe and beyond for illustrations, and last but not least also asking about possibilities for engagement and action for the sake of European democracy and liberal and free “open societies” in Europe.
