Lecture by Oleh Tatarov, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine

On 28 May 2025, the oiip had the honour of welcoming Mr. Oleh Tatarov, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, for a high-level lecture on Ukraine’s efforts to investigate and prosecute war crimes committed in the context of the ongoing Russian aggression.
In his presentation, Mr. Tatarov provided a detailed overview of Ukraine’s evolving legal framework and institutional strategies aimed at securing accountability for atrocity crimes. He discussed the country’s legislative amendments under martial law, its cooperation with the International Criminal Court, the establishment of a Joint Investigation Team with several EU partners, and the efforts to document crimes committed against civilians, including acts of sexual violence, torture, and cyber aggression.
The lecture was followed by a lively and substantive discussion with representatives from the diplomatic corps, Austrian ministries, civil society, and academia. Topics included the role of international partnerships, the resilience of judicial institutions during conflict, and the broader implications of legal accountability for global security and the rule of law.
