The Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) is the leading research institute for international politics in Austria.

In our soon to be 47 years of dedicated work we have devoted ourselves to enhancing an informed and unbiased view of world politics both among decision-makers and the wider public.

We have always worked at the juncture between academic and policy-oriented research. Our bottom-up research and presence in the field should push expert debates forward, and our teaching roles help build a new generation of international relations scholars. Our fact-based analysis should deepen the understanding of core international affairs issues and produce concrete and practical policy recommendations to government and business leaders.

Our key research areas are the EU neighbourhood (esp. Turkey & MENA, Western Balkans), the role of major powers (esp. China, the US), security politics and political violence (from terrorism to inter-state conflict). We provide a European perspective that is both from the German-speaking world and Central Europe.

The oiip is a non-profit association, partly financed by membership fees and donations. Members of the oiip support the Institute’s goals and activities, its broad-based and sustainable funding, and allow it to continue taking independent and courageous positions. Members will be invited to a get-to-know meeting at the Institute as well as all our events, receive every publication, and will be part of our efforts to build an ever-larger network.
